What's the serial number? You appear to have either a 4th model or early 5th model. Parts can vary in different models. Your gun is past the time that buying difficult to find and expensive parts make any economic sense, so I assume your efforts are a labor of love and to gain costly experience. Best course is to sell the gun as a parts donor and buy a fully functional replacement. Ed.

I'll have to double check when I get off work but I believe it was 24xxx. And I got it for a song, it is a labor of love. But we will see just how big the price tag is before I commit to it

Ed says, parts are difficult to find, but I would say that you are very unlikely to find every part you need unless you buy another gun. ebay might have some from time to time, but there is no parts supplier that will offer everything you need. I am afraid your labor of love will turn out to be a pain in the you know what.

To make things even tougher, some internal parts changed over the years and models for these 38 DAs, making it possible that you will find a part that will not be right for you specific model.

BTW, check you number and report, but that gun cannot be a 24XXX - way too low.

I have over half lined up now, and I have a guy who has pulled through for all but one part so we shall see what I can shake down...

This is very true. They never did anything small halfway through a model version right?

230xxx...I was just a hair off! Lots of numbers bouncing around my had lately.

As Ed and Gary said if you are replacing every part in your D/A top break you will exceed the value of your gun by up to 3 times. Also do you know how it is put together? If you don't there will be a gunsmith cost and they are not cheap. Do yourself a favor and sell it for a parts gun and put a little bit more for a gun that is all there and functions.

230XXX puts the gun at 1890. It is a 38 Double Action, Third Model. I understand your desire to put the gun back together, but you must realize that all parts were hand fit before the turn of the century, so the parts you buy and install will not guarantee that the gun will function perfectly.

There is something to be said for experimenting and learning basic gunsmithing by doing this project, but hope you do not spend too much, since the gun will be worth maybe $200 when done.

Mr. Rakkal, you sir are a brave and patient soul. If you have the pockets and the parts contacts go at it and have fun. You are about to get self-educated. When you complete your quest, you have a cherished piece.
Good luck and keep us all posted.

Rakkal, if your gun is indeed an antique, and you have trouble finding the rest of your parts or have trouble putting it together, ship it to me and I will see what parts I have and see if I can get it going for you. I will charge you only for any parts I use. Let me know.

Thanks everyone! This is actually my first smith I've done this with, but I've already brought three iver johnsons brought to life, another two sitting on the work bench awaiting parts!

As for this one, one of my contacts found everything besides the trigger. Which they have on numrich and a pack of parts on gunbroker so it looks like this is all doable and should come out to be right about 200 or less total.

Handfit parts does worry me a bit, so I'll take my time and work it slowly. I've got a number of tools ready to go!

I've seen triggers listed as new and old model. Any idea which this would need?

I found a parts lot that has the same trigger gaurd and side plate and includes a trigger. I'd say that's likely the same?

The old and new style trigger was used with the re-curved trigger guard. A Third Model should have a trigger with a rear flat bar looking pivot, rather than being irregular shaped and spiked like the First & Second Models.

The only schematic I have is a 4th Model 38 DA.

I don't know why this picture turned out so small, since it opens from my computer full size. I edited it and am trying to attach a larger version below.

I have some misc parts for the DA but not sure what caliber , or version of the DA. I have triggers, cylinder stops, and many of the other parts you have mentioned. They were in my late brothers stuff and not labeled well enough. If you end up missing a particular part or two you can private e-mail me and I will see what I have. The way it would work is I would put a price on the part and send the parts to you. If they are correct you can send me the money for them and if not correct ,you can send them back. Your only risk then is the postage to mail them back.

Does anyone have a picture of a cylinder stop, or even know if it's interchangeable with a 32?
