Default Old S&W .38 5 shot Revolver

Question that I doubt I will get an answer for because this is a vague post, but does anyone have a clue what S&W revolve this is? Quite beat up.

Man, you were correct. Between the distance and the fuzziness of the pic , you have thrown out a challenge. It kinda looks like a S&W. Just a suggestion, on the butt there is a serial number. Would help greatly. Just a few clear pics of the top of the barrel and number on the butt. My old eyes cant even venture an intelligent guess. It may be European. We will help with more info.

It is a D/A top break. What caliber is it? What is the serial number? You need to move this to the antique section. I am sure they will move it for you.

Your gun is called the .38 Double Action. From observable features it is either a third, fourth or fifth model. The company made over half a million of them, so they aren't rare. The models I mentioned were in production from 1884-1911. In sound condition they can be shot. They chamber the .38 S&W cartridge, not .38 Special. The ammunition is still available but can be expensive since there is not much demand for it.

If you can give us the serial number, we can tell you which variety you have.

There is a Sticky at the top of the page that tells you what information you need to post to learn just what you have.

I believe it is an Iver Johnson based upon what I 'think' I'm seeing on the grip/stock panel. The top of the barrel will tell who made the revolver. The markings on the side of the barrel will tell what caliber it was made to shoot.

Not an IJ though it may be wearing IJ grips, or something else. The trigger looks like a S&W, though Marlin made some top breaks with a similar trigger profile. Cylinder size indicates a 38. If it is a SW 38 DA, the serial number would put it in the 3rd model range which would make it an antique firearm.

It sure looks like a S&W to me. Mike, what leads you to believe it is not?? I tried to bring back some resolution to the stocks, but just cannot make out what is in the top circle. We really need some close-ups of the stocks and barrel top rib, or at least a detailed description.

With the new pictures, assuming that both stocks match, I'll go with Gary's observation and David's also. I appears to be a .38 DA, Third Model.

From the looks of the first picture it seems to be keeping company with a Colt 1877 DA.

To be honest, there is no value in that one. There were a quarter million made and in the condition I see, absolutely no collector value. Maybe $100 for a shadow box or as a parts gun is about all you might expect.
