date of manufacture
I just purchased a 32 cal. top break S & W chrome or silver plated pistol from a online auction.
I just need to know the date of manufacture to see if it is a antique and no need to get it registered.
the serial # is 50928
Thanks for helping,
George Mader

There are at least three models that fit your description of a .32 S & W top break. Is it a single action, double action with an external hammer or double action only?
Given the low SN it is likely an antique, however.

Welcome to the Forum. Does your revolver have a spur trigger? Does it have a hammer or is it hammerless. Let us know ane we can give you the model ID and year it left the factory.

32 cal top break
The picture of the gun looks like it is a spur trigger and it has a hammer.
Thanks, George

That would be a 32 Single Action revolver. These were made from 1878 to 1892, with almost 100,000 made. Your serial number would have shipped from the factory around 1880 - 1881.

Forgot to mention that the finish is nickel. S&W never produced chrome plated guns in the 1800s and used silver to plate early tip-up revolvers.

So what did the online auction listing identify it as being? I'm a little curious about why you would buy such a revolver without knowing exactly what it was.

black hawk 88, your question appeared in the Antique section and will be moved to the Smith & Wesson Semi-Auto section. Someone will be able to answer your question there.
