Default S&W Model 2 second issue "Modernized" sort of

Bought this .38 as my cc piece.

Well, no, but for the novelty. Somebody put an effort into "fixing it up"

That's the "Holy Grail" S&W. It's the long lost missing Bubba Wesson's one off prototype with the excavated frame " speed loader" cavity! Congrats! Ed.

To avoid confusion, I would call the revolver a 38 Single Action, 2nd Model. There was a rim-fire Model 2 spur trigger made over a decade before that model and or some reason the factory resurrected the model number. Catalogs of the 1880s called this gun a New Model 38, No. 2. Collectors use the naming convention set in place by Neal/Jinks book on S&W, published in the 1960s.

Sorry to say this, but if there were a way to make that gun more ugly, I would not know how. Those stocks are even more offensive to my eye than the loading trough. Somehow putting 1980s stocks on an 1880s gun doesn't work for me. I bet it still shoots great.

Default Glad to get an informed name for the ugly duckling

Glad to narrow down its proper name. The GUNBROKER.COM description was actually, "SMITH&WESSON MODEL 1 1/2 2ND MODEL CAL. 32CF". Better off calling it "S&W THINGY".

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", the woman said when she kissed the cow.

To me, modern manufacturing had hit the M&P revolver with an ugly stick.

I've considered lengthening the chambers on a spare cylinder in order to shoot .38 Special full wadcutters in one of my beater .38 Single Actions. Would make a good and safe pocket carry since the hammer firing pin can be rested between cartridge heads.

Lengthening the chambers for .38 SPL wadcutters is a recipe for disaster. If you check the SAAMI specs you will find the pressures for wadcutters are the same as standard .38 Specials, which is much too high for a top break gun.

13000 cup in 38 S&W at about 750 FPS vs 17000 cup in 38 S&W Special at about 900 FPS both using a 148 grn wadcutter. Not much to gain for the risk you are taking.
