Info and date on Scholfield just found
Can anybody tell me a date when this was made? Also is it possible this was a factory nickel gun? Also what's the approximate value?

Schofields were made 1875-1877.
Factory nickel is VERY VERY scarce, refurbished and plated Army surplus are fairly common.
It cost $13 new. Current value depends on originality and condition. Show close clear pictures and somebody will make a guess.
If you "just found" it for sale, state the price and somebody will say if he thinks it reasonable.

We need pictures and a serial number. Except for the few commercial guns shipped to S&W distributors, there are no factory shipping records for 1st or 2nd model Schofields. Roy uses the invoice date that the factory billed the Gov't as the ship date for factory letters. The National Archives has records of the Springfield Arsenal receipts for the cases of Schofields from S&W, by serial number, etc. and interesting correspondence between the Schofield brothers & S&W, etc. Charlie Pate hopes to someday get his definitive work on the Schofield model into print and answer all the questions we have about the gun. Ed.

Looks like a 2nd model shipped in 1877. The gun has been refinished...poorly. Someone else will have to give it a value.

Assuming it's in good mechanical condition and all numbers match and the grips are same serial number as the gun, it might bring $1500-$2000 at a good gun show. Condition of finish is poor due to a sloppy refinish to nickel from blue at sometime in the past. The market is down probably 40% over the last couple years for guns with condition issues like this gun. Ed.

Its in great mechanical condition. I have always wanted one and went ahead and bought it.
This gun has been Lettered before and I have the guys name it was letter to and the serial number. The letter has been lost is there a way to retrieve that letter?

You might contact Roy Jinks, S&W Historian, c/o S&W. Give him the s/n and the name it was lettered for, and see if he can "reproduce" the letter. Might cost you as much as getting a new letter in your name.
