Default .35 Semi-Auto Pistol (Model of 1913)

I have a 8th Type .35 S&W Auto. The Standard Catalog says it can be opened for cleaning by the hinge. How do you do that?

Remove magazine, move slide (breechblock) rearward using the release button. With pistol upside down press down firmly on trigger guard and pull outward quickly. It is tricky.

Tricky is being too generous - I've followed these instructions to the letter many times, and am getting nowhere. I can feel the trigger guard move very slightly when I depress it as directed, but it just won't come out.

What am I missing? My early gun is in nearly new condition - is it just stiff? Just throwing this in in case it makes any difference - the serial number is 19.
