Default How scarce is this one?

I made an "impulse" buy today on this Safety Hammerless w/ a 5"bbl. Is this an unusual barrel length? What is approximate DOB (serial # 189xxx)?

Best,
Charles

That one isn't scarce at all. The 38 Safety revolver was a very good selling model around the turn of the century. There were over a quarter million made and quite a few in 5" configuration. The 2" and 6" are not so common but still do not bring much of a premium. Yours is a 38 Safety Hammerless, 4th Model, shipped around 1904-1905. Looks pretty good, but has probably shot lots of black powder and corrosive primvers in its day.

The 4th Model had pinned front sights and forged front sight had to wait until the introduction of the 5th Model. There are, however, some 5th Models that had pinned sights as well.

Well........I saw that 5" bbl. and thought I might have stumbled across an odd one. I have two other agency marked Safety Hammerless .38s. They both have 3.75" bbls.(If I recall correctly). So.....Thanks for the wise counsel. It's off to the "classifieds".

Best,
Charles

The exact serial number that is the breaking point between 4th & 5th models is unknown, and collectors often say they have a 5th model with a pinned front sight and they site the published serial number ranges for the 4th & 5th models as their info. source. The published numbers are best guesses only, so it's much easier to use the presence of a pinned sight vs. no pinned sight to differentiate between the models, I think. Ed.
