I'm not familiar with the term "short strap". Any chance of a picture or two??

Welcome to the Forum. Are you referring to a 1 7/16" cylinder when you state short strap? There are a few .32 caliber chamberings for the model you are referring to, so we would need more information, plus a few photos to help you out. If the caliber is not stamped on the barrel, you will have to either take exact chamber measurements, or find the caliber by trial and error. The standard calibers were 32 S&W, 32-44 S&W, and 320 Revolving Rifle, plus more special order guns have been documented. Also, the serial number would be helpful. Just to be sure, the gun you are referring to was called a New Model 3, which was a large frame 6-shot revolver offered in single action only. There was also a New Model 3 Double Action revolver, formerly called a 44 Double Action First Model. It was not offered in a 32 caliber.

"Short Strap" is a lesser used term for the majority of these guns---those with the short cylinder----"long strap" being used to describe the more unusual variation with the long cylinder. And having applied both terms as respects the cylinders, I'm pretty sure you'll find the terms are actually applicable to the barrels----to the respective top straps---which look the same---if you're not paying close attention---like me.
