Need Help Identitying an old Top-Break
Hi, my name is Mark and I'm new to the site.
I'm purchased this pistol a while ago and would really like to know what model it is exactly & what it's worth also?
It's a S&W Top-Break
serial # 851**
32 caliber
2" barrel
With fixed sights
Thanks in advance!

Well, it looks like a 32 Double Action 4TH model from the Sn.
It appears to be well carried and loss of finish is evident.
Now, draw your attention to the barrel address. Up around the front sight.
Still a nice little curio. Best, Mike

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Your Barrel has been shortened. Pretty much kills any collector value. Maybe $150 for a pocket shooter.

Thanks Mike and Guy!
I was curious about the barrel being shortened. I couldn't find any others like it matching that serial number range. I only paid $75 for it a couple years ago, so I guess didn't too bad.
Thanks again for the help, Much appreciated!
Mark

Mark, any value would be as a shooter since the barrel has been shortened. One thing that I want to point out is that the barrel hinge screw/pivot is in backward. The slotted screw should be on the left side. No worry; loosen the screw a few turns and tap the head with a plastic mallet or screwdriver handle. The pivot (flat headed round piece) will move out of the hinge. Reverse the two parts being careful to align the 'witness' mark on the frame with the mark on the flat headed/round pivot. Tap it into place and replace the screw.

Mike, I've noticed sometime what I thought was the same situation ( reversed) and then found out that the camera used for the photo ( phone?) works like a mirror- the picture is reversed giving the effect that something is backwards, when it's really not. Don't know if that's the case here, or not. Ed.

The hinge screw, in this case, is definitely reversed. The head of the screw should be on the same side as the sideplate. In this case, the situation is reversed.
