Default 1st model S&W Schofield stamp mark

Gentleman, I took the grips off my Schofield & discovered a capital "X" stamped on the lower curved corner of the metal frame pistol grip. If holding the pistol with your right hand, it is on the thumb side of the frame. Does any one know the significance of this marking?

'X"

It's the stamp of an inspector or a fitter/assembler. Ed.
