Nimschke engraving? S&W 1 and 1/2
Hello, just had a quick question about an engraved S&W 1 and 1/2. They had two in a local shop, both are second issue handguns. Is this handgun a Nimschke engraved revolver?

Fair quality New York style dealer engraving, and might have been done in Nimschke's shop by a journeyman engraver, but not by the master himself, in my opinion. Ed.

After studying many of Nimschkes Work, I would join the opinion, good work, but not Nimschke.

This is a Hopkins and Allen XL-No6 41 Rimfire That has been looked at by a noted antique firearms expert and he declared it to be by Nimschke. It may have been done by him or in his shop. The work is very well done and very similar to the OPs gun.

The style may be very similar, but the execution isn't the same. Not done by the same hand.

If you compare the pulls of Nimschke's work to this Hopkins & Allen, you can quickly see there's no comparison! Having Nimschke engrave a Hopkins & Allen is like lipstick on a pig! Nimschke's pull records show he engraved some 75+ different makes of firearms. Not one is a Hopkins & Allen. That's not to say that an apprentice in his shop might have worked on this H&A, but certainly not the Master. Ed.

I agree that the likelihood of Nimschke himself being the actual engraver is zero to none. I do find it interesting that these two guns are very similar yet do appear to be by two different hands. Both exhibit some of the Nimschke traditional traits. The engraving on these two guns is way above average for the type of gun they are. I have an absolute like new Hopkins that is nickel plated with the enamel still in the engraving and it is nothing like these two. I have other "suicide specials that are engraved but are still no comparison to these two guns. The Hopkins in 41 is quite rare as far as I can tell. I have not seen another one.
