.32 Double Action Second Model
Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and I need help with a .32 top break second model. I bought this little gem non working pile of parts. Well duh it's missing one. I believe it's called the cylinder latch ? It mounts in the trigger other end sticks up through the frame and contacts cylinder. I think this is the only part I need. I have checked Numrich and First but haven't seen the right one. (I have had another so I know what it looks like). Anyone have any ideas that can help an old man?
I'm also a little rusty on the reassembly of same , is there a schematic anywhere out there???
Any help is greatly appreciated .

Welcome to the Forum. The part is called the hand. It rotates the cylinder as the trigger is pulled. I would check on eBay since there are often parts for sale. You can also post a request in the Wanted to Buy section of this Forum. Also check with Jack First, a parts company. You should be able to simply call them to,ask for your part. I believe there is also a hand spring that you need to make sure you have or need to buy as well.

Thanks for that. I didn't see it on Jack Firsts Web site, calling them is a good idea.

After looking it over again I have the hand, it is pressed in on end of the trigger an reaches up in the fame the part I need fits in the trigger and pivots on the trigger pin. Tension is held by a small coil spring and a small round slug recessed into the trigger .Installation of all is kinda tricky.

I'm having trouble visualizing just what part you are talking about.
Is your gun a hammerless or a hammer 2nd Model.?
I have a junker 2nd Model Top-Break Hammer model and I don't think there are any coil springs (other than the barrel latch and extractor springs) in it anywhere . The hammerless has several coils but none I'm aware of connected to the trigger.
Can you figure out what the missing part's function is??
Added:
check out the parts numbered 7, 8 and 9 in the following schematic for the Safety Hammerless.
32 SAF HAMMERLESS Accessories | Numrich Gun Parts
Could these be what you need??

Are you sure that you have a S&W? I know that Harrington & Richardson revolvers use small coil springs, but as Dean states, not S&W. Is sounds like you are referencing the front sear, which is the only other part attached to the trigger.

Is defiantly a Smith&Wesson sn#115048 , refer to item 8 in Numrich schematic. Cylinder stop. This looks nothing like mine but there is a difference between model 1 & 2 and everything that followed. The picture may be of the newer style. It is held in place with the trigger pin. One end pivots up thru Frame and contacts cylinder holding it in place.

Jack First described it to a T. They are currently out of stock but are planning a run. It could be several months.

Welcome to the forum.
If it is the part that locks into the cylinder notches to stop the cylinder from rotating then it is called the cylinder stop. On some of the earlier S&W's it came up through the bottom of the frame and in later models it was moved to the top of the frame. Don't ask me which models as I am just graduating from hand ejectors to the antiques.
Someone may have a parts gun that the stop could be salvaged from or you might find a junker at a show that you could take it from and then sell the other good parts to recoup your investment. Other than finding a machinist to make you a part, which tends to get pricey, this is the best way to locate many of these old out of production parts.
Folks here on the forum are very helpful and will either send you a part at no charge or for a nominal fee if they have one in their parts kit.
Good luck. Putting one of these older S&W's back in shooting condition is very rewarding and I have just gotten into it myself.

Thanks for your help and encouragement. I find these early Smiths to be very interesting and I love shooting old firearms.I find the level of machining to be quite extraordinary given the times in which they were produced.
