Default Help to ID Model and Ammo Type- BP or Smokeless

Hi Guys, New to Forum. Need some help to id the model and ammo type for the attached. What I know so far. Marked .38 S&W, SN 452582. Top Break, double action. From my limited research i'm thinking it maybe a 4th model. (decent shape, but looks to have the front sight knocked off) Can anybody confirm? I'd also like to shoot it one day- so i'm also trying to figure out if Blackpowder or Smokeless is correct for the gun.

Welcome to the Forum. You have a 38 Double Action, 4th Model that would have shipped around 1903. It takes 38 S&W cartridges. A few ammunition manufacturers still make this caliber and any standard factory ammo will function fine in your revolver. It has undoubtedly shot many smokeless loadings and will function fine if in good working order. This revolver had a pinned half-moon flat front sight and can be made quite easily and pinned to the rib. Of course, gun has been buffed and refinishes and the stocks are not S&W factory, but remind me of Harrington & Richardson target sights. Looking at the checkering, they were probably made by a previous owner.

Thanks for the info-much appreciated! It was just recently inherited from a close uncle along with some other very cool civil war era guns. Best way I can think to honor his memory is to take them to the range like I did with him. Regards

Well, that and posting pictures of the other guns over in the "Other Firearms and Knives" forum ... (assuming they're non- S&W)
