Welcome to the Forum. You have a 38 Double Action, 4th Model that would have shipped around 1903. It takes 38 S&W cartridges. A few ammunition manufacturers still make this caliber and any standard factory ammo will function fine in your revolver. It has undoubtedly shot many smokeless loadings and will function fine if in good working order. This revolver had a pinned half-moon flat front sight and can be made quite easily and pinned to the rib. Of course, gun has been buffed and refinishes and the stocks are not S&W factory, but remind me of Harrington & Richardson target sights. Looking at the checkering, they were probably made by a previous owner.
