Default Help Identifying S&W Top Break

Hello:

I have an older top break S&W revolver. The hammer is visible, with fixed sight. The barrel measures 3.25 inches. The cylinder is a five shot. The only number I can find is on the metal portion of the butt: 188276. I've attached one photo and can provide more if needed. Thanks in advance for your expert help!

It's a .38 Double Action, likely from the late 1880 decade. It is chambered for .38 S & W (not Special), still available and loaded light for older guns if yours is mechanically sound. It shows the usual nickel finish corrosion from black powder use and is worth in the $150-200 range. Hope this is helpful.

38 Double Action, 4th Model that would have shipped around 1895. There were tons of these revolvers made, so they do not commend much money, but are great plinking guns.

Thanks for your very helpful and fast responses! This was my great-grandfather's pistol from pre-WWI so it's great to have the background history as well. Thanks again!
