Default 38 Top Break Model ID help needed

Hi all! I just picked up my first antique S&W and could use some help pinning down the model.

I thought it was a straightforward Model 2 in 38 but the barrel length is 3.5" and doesn't appear (to my eye) to have been cut, based on the top markings.

The serial number is 97xxx, if that helps to pin it down.

Unfortunately the original grips were trashed but I have repros on the way.

Also, although the cocking and firing mechanism seems to work perfectly, the cylinder (also matching but devoid of any nickel plating) spins freely. Is this normal or has something worn down on it?

I don't plan on shooting it but would like as much info about it as I can get.

Thanks very much in advance for the help.

Looks like a .38 Single Action 2nd Model (AKA Model 2, 2nd Issue). My guess is it shipped around 1890 but someone with better data will come along. It also sounds like your cylinder stop is broken or gummed up. Have you cleaned it thoroughly?

Hi - thank you! I have not cleaned it yet, as i just got it this week.

I'll try that first. I'm amazed that the finish is so nice but have no idea why the cylinder seems to be completely without any finish at all.

The cylinder is probably corroded from the black powder residue...or it could be a replacement from a blued gun. You might want to soak it overnight or for several days in 1/2 and 1/2 auto trans fluid and acetone. Then flush the action with aeorsol auto parts cleaner. If it is gummed up, that probably will fix it.
