Ever since my Great Aunt Suzie gave a young boy a M&P Model of 1905 with a notched stock. I have randomly collected S&W revolvers that captured my imagination with out much thought to their condition. As it turned out, I have a variety of revolvers made before 1900, mostly in fair to good condition that I should sale before they send me out to pasture. I have been a member of the forum for some time, more as a reader than participant and would like to know if there a service or bulletin board that I can advertise the revolvers for sale? Any advice that would help me determine their worth would be appreciated also. I suppose I should add they are mostly Models 1 thru 3 including a 1st model Schofield,and a bunch of others - lot of safety hammerless.

Depending on how many & what they are, it's a big hassle trying to sell online, as it involves shipping, packaging, insuring, liability, vetting the buyers to see if they are legal, etc. Depending on where you live, a good auction house will give you a very good estimate of what your guns can bring at auction and you get a check from them, you're home free, and they take all the troubles involved in selling guns. Sellers premiums can be negotiated downwards if you have good merchandise and you can set reserves on high dollar guns. Ed.

My assumption was that you are selling antiques, so there is no problem selling on this Forum. Besides, this is the place for S&W collectors and if prices are fair, I think you would do fine selling here. Modern guns cannot be sold across state lines without an FFL, but no issues for pre-1899 guns, except for a couple states.

One of the best pricing resources on the web is Gun Broker.com. Many folks use this service to sell their guns and it gives you an idea what they might sell for. When I need prices I check the SOLD auctions for comparable guns. You want SOLD prices because you can ASK anything but only real past sales will give you real market value.

Once you have determined what you should sell them for you can use the FOR SALE section here on the forum and advertise the guns for sale. Worst case scenario the guns don't sell and you will need to go elsewhere. Best case, you get your prices and pass them on to real S&W collectors and there are NO fees involved.

Antiques do not need to go through an FFL and guns up to today's date in 1967 can be sold to a collector that holds a Curio and Relics license directly. Anything built after 3/13/1967 needs to be transferred by an FFL dealer.

I would NEVER give an auction house my collection without a firm commitment from them. They're are only in it for themselves. Commissions up to 25% of the selling price and high buyers premium of 15 to 20 percent. They have no incentive to gain the highest price for you. The faster they move product, the more money they make. I know, I've gotten burned on more than one occasion. An example, I gave an East Coast auction house paperwork from a prominent sword maker. It contained letters to and from important people in the civil war and later. I listened to them tell me how they would be honored to sell this lot in their upcoming auction. Pre sale estimate was $10,000 to $15,000. After it didn't sell at the auction, they posted it online. They never explained that to me. I assumed, yes I know about assume, they would send the lot back to me. The lot sold for under $2000.00. By the way, it took them 6 weeks to send me my money. Good luck in whatever you decide.
