Default Model 1 Schofield Help

So I always knew about this revolver because my dad said it had belonged to his great grandfather or perhaps great great grandfather and had been passed down in the family ever since. About 5 years ago after my dad passed my mom was cleaning out his safe and said I should have it. My paternal grandmother echoed what my dad had said. I am never going to sell it but I was wondering about its value in the auction market. Additionally, with the serial number of 71, it most certainly was utilized in the West. Is there any logs or inventories where I could find out where this gun was used by the Army/Calvary. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you

sideplate does look a tad different than the frame in the pic. Is this lighting or metal finish?

I don't like the serial number on the butt. I think the US is weak because the butt has been filed. The sideplate has been refinished.

As Don says, the side plate may have been refinish, but more likely is a replacement. I'm not sure from the fuzzy photo what may have been done to the butt, other than wear. The rest of the gun does not show the wear that would have been expected for a gun issued to western serving Cavalry, so I suspect this gun was probably issued to a state militia, that promptly sold it to a gun dealer, which is how many of the Schofields in todays collection show minimum use. The only record I know of for where a Schofield may have been issued, is the old Springfield Research Service volumes which published serial numbers of guns listed in unit inventories when there was a change of command. Ser. # 71 is not listed in those volumes. Ed.

Thanks for the information. In person the gun looks consistent and has not been refinished. I did read somewhere that some people would try to remove the US stamp for fear of the revolver being confiscated by the the police as being property of the US government if discovered. I know for the last 50+ years it has been in temp and moisture controlled safe. Anyhow thanks for the information and checking out the pics.

No, at the very least, the sideplate has been refinished. The colour is not consistent with the bluing of the time frame, there is too much discord between the finish of the sideplate and the frame immediately beyond, and the fit of the sideplate to the frame is poor, suggesting polishing. An original, unrefinished firearm would never have made it through quality control with such poor tolerances.

I will give that the sideplate may be with original finish, BUT, if so, it was finished on a different gun. This would also account for the poor fit......
