Default Schofield? -- Early Sad Case

A friend's early S&W, engraved & pearl but with the small flaw of the topstrap portion broke off & missing --

A later barrel, latch, etc was found to fit. The question was whether to find a barrel & engrave it as a replacement or (my preference) cut off & transplant the top strap. Awaiting decision -- owner likes it as-is ------>

Maybe a visit to Turnbull Resorations would be in order?

First - It's not a Schofield, it's a 2nd model American or Russian, depending on caliber. Does the gun letter as a special order, or factory engraved? Is there any verification as to who the engraver might have been? It's hard to tell from your one photo exactly what repairs are required to restore the top strap, plus what shop you are thinking of that's qualified to do an undetectable restoration job. Engraving a replacement barrel or repairing this one will incur expenses perhaps beyond the value of the result, especially if you send it to Turnbull (who prefers not to work on S&Ws ) Do you have the missing pieces(s) ? Ed.

Agree with growr. Send the gun and replacement parts to Turnbull. Keep the broken barrel as a conversation starter and to keep the original complete.

2nd Model American or Russian most probably engraved in Nimschke shop. A good fabricator might fit a top strap and latch mechanically that could be somewhat aesthetically pleasing without breaking the bank. I can't see anything else that would make sense.

I wish we knew the truth about what happened to this revolver. I suspect that there is a denial about what actually caused the catastrophic breakage of this otherwise nice collectible revolver. I'll venture a guess that the wrong load was fired and, because of age, the crystalline structure of the early steel gave way.

Schofield? - note the ? & thanks for the ID. NO "letter" info available. I would cut the top strap off another barrel & weld it on, conceal the weld & engrave appropriately. As I stated the top strap is missing. As for "qualified", I've done more complex jobs than that in my 50 years of pre-perc gun restoration. Cost was not a factor in the issue --

The only major job I have in photo, a 1905 Colt with a piece sawed oout of it --

If necessary I would do a passable job of engraving --

My opinion would be a top strap transplant, presuming the barrel/cylinder assembly are original to the gun, and re-engraving. A lot less work than re-engraving and finishing the entire upper assembly.

I suspect the owner is not interested in shooting it but that might be an issue due to the nature of the repair? Please let us know the decision and see any "after" photos.

My purpose in posting this early S&W sad case was only for show & tell. Seems like it went further from the speculation & advice that it brought. Its restoration is IMO pretty much a dead issue, in that the owner seems satisfied as-is. --- To close on a high note, a shot from memory lane of oldies, a couple are DIY repros I built from scratch, the rest are restoration jobs for clients ------>
