Default Quick price check?

I am at a gunshop that has a S&W top break in .44-40 with a low 4 digit serial number in the 3xxx range. It has basically zero finish with nice patina. The lock up is OK when in battery.

What is a decent price? They will take $450 OTD. I am outside typing this. Sticker price is $499 plus tax. So. I'd get about $85 off. Help me decide!!

Best,
Charles

Sounds like a 44-40 frontier. It would be priced about right. Might be worth even a bit more than that.

Be sure it is an S & W and not a foreign copy, make sure it cycles and times properly (few gunsmiths will work on them), and pay the $450 .

If it was me and the gun actually functioned correctly and was a S&W i'd buy it.

I just looked at my 2013 Standard Catalog of Firearms pricing guide (Digital Edition) and all the large caliber break tops in poor condition start at either $400 or $500 for values and the catalog is 4 years old. I'm pretty sure prices have only gone up since then
