.38 Hamerless safety for sale at LGS. Anything special?
Looks to be a 6" nickle with possible factory MOP grips. It has some significant edge wear through nickle. Matching SN 407xx era barrel, frame and cylinder. No number on MOP grips, does have stamped letters REP under L grip? What would you pay for this little guy? Seems to be a pretty honest little pistol that grabbed my attn for some reason.

If I've learned anything over the years, it's that when something "grabs your attention" you'd better just go ahead and buy it, or you won't sleep sound for awhile. If you make a mistake and end up with something you don't want, you can always sell it...
I only have one similar revolver, but that looks like a nice one, and those MOPs look like real Smiths, at least from what I can see in the photos.
Best Regards, Les

Mr. 0311, how much do they want? Shop or private sale? I like it, cute little gun. Has some real things going for it if you collect SHs. Best.

It's a nicer than average example with a scarce barrel length and what appear to be factory MOP stocks. Not your typical finish worn, pitted bore $200 example - maybe about twice that?

Looks nice to me. Not sure what the REP means but it is in the location where S&W usually put dates when guns were sent back to the factory for repair work.
Maybe it was a sales reps sample and was marked REP for that reason so it wouldn't be sold as new.

At shop, on consignment, asking $475. Didn't think about sales rep, thought it could stand for repair. Would these models be marked with an N for nickle as later examples were? Which model is this SH?

From what I have read, I am guessing early 3rd model by SN, maybe 1890 production?

Looks like a .38 Safety Hammerless 2nd. model with an un-
common barrel length. MOP grips could be factory, but only
a letter will verify. If the lock up and timing is good, and the
barrel is not too pitted, I'd grab it for $475.00.

At $475 it would probably be in Massachusetts by now.

I believe you have a 2nd Model and not a 3rd Model, probably shipped around 1890 as stated above. There were about 37,000 of this model made. The barrel length appears to be 5”, of which about 13% of the total production of all Safeties were 5”. Check out the image below for all standard barrel lengths of the 38 Safety.
ADDED: I guess I should have identified the barrel lengths for these Safeties - Top to bottom: 6", 5", 4", 3 1/4", and 2".
The initials might also be a prior owner’s initials, a company identification, or any number of other options. If you acquire the gun and are feeling lucky, a factory letter might tell you that the gun went directly to a person with those initials.
As for value, I wish that these revolvers would command more money and get the prices they deserve, but not the case yet. I am buying 38 Safeties in blue finish, similar to the condition of your example for $350. If nickel, usually less, BUT the original pear stocks will bring it back up to maybe $375. Depends on how badly you want the gun, but I would offer something south of $400 and pretend to start walking if the shop doesn’t come up with a counter-offer. You can be sure they currently have the price at what they think is high retail, so do some negotiating. Good luck.

Consignments at a shop can be tricky. Try an offer. Most of the nickel guns
I have had and seen, have some peeling. These were pocket pistols, so
carried a lot. Try $375. Best

If you PM the shop name and phone number I will contact them and see if I am able to negotiate a better price.
