I have just acquired another Smith & Wesson revolver, it is a Safety Hammerless. The serial number is 248755. I would say the nickel finish might be 70%. It has wood grips which definitely show some use but not cracked. It functions well. The cylinder is a little loose but my range rod went in with no contact on the cylinder. Is the 38 S&W round .357? As with my other S&W top break revolver I am very impressed with the quality and craftsmanship of this old gun. What year was this produced? What might this gun be worth. I know the pic is not very good, I need to get another camera.

Pic looks a little fuzzy. Grips are homemade. S&W made a lot of these in 38 and 32. Very little value. Best

Welcome to The Forums from the Wiregrass! Your safety hammerless is a 5th model that shipped sometime between 1907 and 1940. As mentioned previously there were so many of these guns made they are not very sought-after. I usually see guns in the condition of yours sell for $200 or less around here. The 38 S&W cartridge is fatter and shorter than the 357 or 38 Special.

Grips are worn, but look like factory walnut grips. Do they
number to the gun? Look on the right grip for the serial number.

They are amazing revolvers and I am always impressed with the quality and functionality of the Safety revolvers. The bullet size for the 38 S&W cartridge is .361" and was a 145 grain round nose shape. I reload and try to re-create the original design with enough Unique powder to drive the bullet around 650 fps.

The grips do not have a number on the inside that I can see anyway. There is no emblem on the outside either so I would think they were not original.

Does the gun have a MADE IN USA on the right side of the fame above the trigger guard? If manufactured in the 1920s, they would have had a rounded top without a medallion.

Here is a .38 Safety Hammerless 5th model I picked up a couple
of weeks ago, serial # 251578. The walnut grips are original
and number to the gun. The SCSW says the checkered walnut
grips scarce, worth premium if original to gun. So your walnut
grips look legit, just a bit worn. Take the right grip out in the
sunlight and see if you can see the serial number. Mine is in
pencil which fades over time.

I did look at the grip and there is a very faint number which appears to be the serial number.

OK! I was wrong about the grips. My only excuse is the fuzzy pic.
