Default 32 short revolver ID help

Hello, trying to help a friend ID this revolver and get a year of manufacture. Then get a trigger return spring for it. The SN on the bottom of the grip is 3130XX and the barrel is stamped with 32 S.& W. CTG.

I have a couple of pictures posted. Sorry for the dark images. I can get more if needed.

Muley Gil replied (I had this posted in the wrong forum)
"It is a .32 Double Action 5th Model and dates to 1909-1919."

If anyone has more info, I would appreciate it. Does S&W still do the research? the links I found for requesting it take you to the S&W homepage.

thanks!

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Well Muley Gil pert much gave you the info. We classify these guns as "top breaks" since they are loaded and reloaded by opening the barrel latch and tipping the barrel downward. This is as opposed to the earlier tip ups and the later hand ejectors (cylinder swings out of the frame to load/reload). The top breaks also have the auto shell ejection for faster reloading. As you note, this gun chambers the .32 S&W cartridge which is the short version of the later manufactured .32 S&W Long. Although originally a black powder cartridge, smokeless versions can be fired in your friends gun. They are not very powerful but are fun to shoot.

I agree with Mike about foregoing the letter which will cost almost as much as the gun is worth and is unlikely to tell you more than the date it shipped and to which hardware store or distributor it went.
