Model 2 Type revolver-I.D. Info
Have a revolver that looks like a Model 2, but in 38 S&W caliber. Non-pinned front sight. Five shot, nickle plated, 4 inch barrel. Patent dates are as follows: 1/17 & 24/ 65; 7/11/65; 8/24/69; 1/19/75; Reissue 7/25/71. Black rubber S&W grips. Spur trigger. Serial number 288XX. Top break. Does not have the pin through the ejector of housing under barrel. Two (2) screw side plate, left side.
Any help in identifying this model would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! It sounds like you have a 2nd Model Baby Russian, AKA Model #2, 2nd Model. I echo Breakaway's call for pictures. If you don't know how to post pictures, take a look at this video.

Ff it is a 38 caliber, can't be anything else. It is better identified as a 38 Single Action, 2nd Model and it would have shipped from the factory around 1880. There were two different guns called Model 2, but the original was a 32 Rimfire tip-up revolver.

SCSW, 4th Ed. As Gary says, top break, .38 S&W, single action with spur trigger. Can't be anything else.

I really like these little 38s. There are a couple interesting features on this one. I have an 1879 date for the changeover of the block style S&W on the top of the hard rubber stocks to the more familiar intertwined logo. If that date is accurate, the revolver would have shipped a year earlier than I estimated.
The other observation, as made by the OP was that the front sight was not pinned. Looking closely at the plating, I think the gun was refinished. If so, the front pin may be sanded and buffed down. This would happen unless the sight was removed. High magnification would be needed to determine if there is evidence of the pin? There is no example that I have ever seen where the front sight was soldered in place from the factory. All 38 SAs had pinned front sights. In the late 1890s when the 32 and 38 DAs went to forged front sights, the factory bolstered the lower section of the sight as it mated with the barrel rib to add needed strength to the otherwise thin sight blade.
These are great little guns and the first top-break pocket revolver made by S&W. They were the start of the production of the 38 S&W caliber, which remained very popular until well into the Twentieth century. Unfortunately, these guns have low value and are not very popular with collectors. I have an 1879 blued one that I shoot occasionally at the range and it still functions like a new gun.

Type 2
The gun was refinished by S&W. I have the original factory "Customer's Estimate and Confirmation Stub", which might explain why there is no visible pin. Grand total, $26.47!

Wow! That's 2X what these guns sold for originally. What's the date on the service work? You should send me a picture of the stub and I'll post it.

This is a picture of the S&W Service Department's cost estimate stub. There is no date on the stub. Looks like it might be post-war. Just guessing because of the price. jdowd, can you carefully remove the grips and look for a stamped date on the left front of the grip frame? It would look like MM.YY.
Also note the "obsolete" stamp and the disclaimer about pitting and functioning.

S&HW Type 2
The digits 1078 appear to the left of the left grip retention pin. The letters "R N" appear to the right of the left grip retention pin. I sent the gun back to S&H about 40 years ago (1078 date?). Hope this helps.
Many thanks.

Okay so you had it refinished in nickel [R N] in October of 1978.
