Default Need info on this gun

I have a S&W top break (?) revolver that appears to be a .32 cal. The Serial number is 85128. It is poor condition but I was hoping you could share some information about it. Model #, date manufactured, etc.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

You show a .32 Double Action, 4th Model.
Made sometime between 1883 and 1898. Maybe somebody can pin it down closer.
Very rusty, a common gun in poor condition, low resale value.

Welcome to the Forum. Unfortunate storage conditions have rusted an otherwise nice old 32 DA. Bluing looks like it was once mostly there, hard rubber stocks are in good condition, and no apparent modifications have been made. Too bad about the finish, but you can improve that with some bronze steel wool and oil, which can remove most of the surface rust. The internals probably need the same treatment. The revolver would have shipped 1885-1886. At a minimum, get a good coat of oil on the surfaces both internal and external to stop the rusting from further damaging the gun, and please no wire brushes or buffing wheels.

Let some oil seep under the grips before you remove. Dont put any money in it just oil and a rag for awhile. Looks like it lived on a nail in the garage or out in the shed. Just be patient and take your time. Best

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! I would drop it into an auto transmission fluid bath for several days to lift the rust. Or, if you want more penetration, make some Ed's Red Gun Bore Cleaner. If you use the Ed's Red, remove the grips first. Get some bronze wool or a copper Chore Boy scrubbing pad to go over it. Cut some of the Chore Boy, wrap around a bronze scrub brush or mop and scrub the bore. To flush the crud out of the action, use aerosol brake/carb/parts cleaner. Spray into the hammer or trigger openings until the effluent runs clear. Then lube.
