I have not been in #3 for a long time, but that sure is a neat frontier gun shop modification. Short barreled, big caliber sash gun. Dont touch it or rub all the history off it is coated with. Good find. Best

Wonder how it got those scratches in the cylinder flutes. Seems as though they'd have had to been deliberately put there?

Neat looking old revolver.

By the way...welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Your Schofield is a 2nd Model likely made in 1877. S&W made 5,934 of these guns between SN 3036 and 8969. So, your gun is one of the last made. They all had 7" barrels so your gun has had its barrel shortened and whoever did it did not put a front sight on it. Unlike the 1st model, your gun has a steel frame. Look for an L and P stamped on the barrel and cylinder and an L stamped on the frame. Those indicate a military gun. The gun is in poor condition but even with the cut barrel it is worth around $750.

A Factory historical letter will tell you the date the Gov't was invoiced for the gun, however no factory shipping records were kept on Schofields. 2nd models covered ser. #s 3001 to 8969. Some references refer to ser.# 1 to 3036 as 1st models, however observed specimens of guns between # 3001 and 3036 are 2nd models. Some 2nd models were shipped to S&W distributors , so are considered civilian guns, however they may have military inspector's stamps on the parts as all parts were inspected by military inspectors prior to assembly. Thanks for all the replies ,
Picked the gun up in southern new Mexico, the barrel was poorly hacked off
Into its current state and sadly does not function. The hammer and trigger work but everything else is seized up.

No malice intended but that's about as down and dirty as a Schofield gets. I have a .44-40 New Model 3 in the same configuration and just a very slight bit nice but the mechanics are excellent.

Welcome to the forum.

The trigger appears to be fully back toward the rear of the trigger guard. Not real familiar with these guns, is that normal????

Does it break open when you pull the latch back ?

From the first glance it appears to have been well rusted, likely the internals too. All that takes is a little water and a few years of improper storage and those small parts inside just fuse together with the rust.

Maybe best bet is to remove the grips (obviously a newer replacement set) and submerge it in a bath of CorrosionX for a few weeks. Remove the 2 catch screws (that hold the catch to the frame using the exact /correct hollow ground screw driver, UNSCREW the cylinder out and let's see what you have. Next step is to remove the pivot pin to re-evaluate.

OR better, send it to a good gunsmith for a quick evaluation.
