1890s old S&W display case
Updated pictures post 27
This is the display case mentioned in SCSW 1, 2, 3, and 4. In SCSW4 there is a short mention of it on page 483 as:
"we have recently seen a curved glass display case with S&W logo in stained glass on the ends that reportedly was made for a turn of the century exposition" ("recently" is a carry over from SCSW1, 1996)
Well, THIS is the display case mentioned !
It was almost Gary Garbrecht's. We had made a deal on it. He planned on having it fully restored but then Gary passed. I never had the heart nor the ambition to bring it to another show after that.
I've had this since 1995 (or there about) purchased from Ray Brazille (RIP) who had originally found it and sold it to someone in the 1950s after which it went missing for about 40 years till it surfaced in 1995. I bought it sight unseen from just a few photographs and Ray Brazille's description. It arrived at the local Airport about a week later.
The son of the owner (who had passed some unknown amount of years prior) found it crated in the attic with a note from his Dad to call Ray Brazille if anything should happen to him.
... or ... at least that's the story that came with it. 
It hasn't been out of the crate since 2001 when I last had it out at a private antique / collectors show in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
Pardon the old digital pix. Digital cameras were something new in 2001.
Anyone still have an old Sony Mavica digital camera that recorded pix to a floppy disc ?

Oh my gosh. What a magnificent artifact! A genuine historical treasure.
If it were mine, I'd fill it with vintage Smiths, then professionally photograph it, then share the photos with everyone.
This is a classic case of "they don't make 'em like that any more."

That is quite a find with an awesome story! I would love to have something like that! I bet there are not very many of those around, maybe a one off. The stained glass is really cool. Thanks for sharing!

Have you thought about speaking with the NRA Museum in Fairfax Va? It could have a safe home for life with an inscription of you the benefactor. Just a thought.

That is an excellent suggestion. You know ... sometimes a good answer is right in front of a guy's nose and he doesn't see it. It's times like this he needs his colleagues and fellow collectors to reboot the thought process.
Such is one of the great benefits of this forum, with special thanks to Lee for the time, patience, expense and dedication for creating and maintaining this forum as well as all the expert commentaries and administrators.
Not to mention the outstanding contributions Roy Jinks has made to this forum. Prior to this forum Roy Jinks was the unreachable "god" of S&W. His dedication to this forum only enhances his dedication to S&W collecting and his life's' work in research and record keeping making him available, at an arm's reach, to the members.
But, just as important is all the valuable input from ALL the members of this forum. Thank you, Mike.
I will speak with Jim Supica about it. If he's comfortable with it, that will be a prime consideration for its future residence.

Mike0251 has made an excellent suggestion ... the NRA museum.
That will be one of the primary considerations as to its future residence.
Much better than sitting in a crate in my garage like the US Govt secret warehouse of Indiana Jones lore.

NRA Museum is a great suggestion. If for some reason that doesn't materialize, perhaps consider The Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History in Springfield MA. They've got great S&W displays as well as maintaining lots of S&W's historical records. And it would be close to Mr.Jinks.
Barring those, you could also consider Speedo's Home Museum of Various Items of Interest. No tax write-offs available, but cold beer served on some occasions. Just saying.

In response to inquiries ... yes, at some time in the near future I will decide whether to place on loan to the NRA or other museum for a period of time or sell it, outright.
From an economical and logical standpoint ... while it belongs in a museum, the value of it gravely exceeds the tax write off I might be allowed for it should I donate it.
To place it on loan to the NRA or other museum would be the logical decision until I consider other options.
Up until a few days ago I had no thought of parting with it other than to display it at the 2017 S&WCA symposium, however, I could not consider transporting it there as there were no display tables remaining.
Thanks to a tenured member who offered me one of his display tables just a few days back, I posted the 2001 pictures of it.
When I un-crate it (sometime next week) I will take more digital images of it.

Yes, my wife is an artist in her stain glass work. She is very good at what she does in glass.
If you would, when you uncrate it and take the pictures, please send a couple of close ups of the ends. Will see what she has to say about duplicating them. There are several ways she can do them.
Paul's has not had any nice pieces come in lately, that I have seen. If I see any will let you know.

A special thanks to CB Wilson who gave me one of his display tables that I could bring it to Charlotte.
Dressed out for the Symposium.
2017 Symposium, with the case all decked out with vintage S&W's including 5 Schofields, 2 straight line single shots, an early American shipped 1870 with 6" barrel. (SN 17xx), 2 pre-war kit guns, 2 rare 1905/4th M&P with factory CHROME finish, 1st Model Russian, and my twin 1854 Patent New Haven Volcanic pistols (engraved & silver plated) a rare New Model 3 Single action Target in .45 S&W Schofield caliber (one of only 2 known to exist) amongst several other other vintage S&Ws.

A single item like your display case could be the basis for an entire collection of fine S&W pistols! That is not just rare and beautiful, it's beyond words! Amazing that it's survived all this time in such magnificent condition!

I realize this is a 2 year old thread but It was mentioned more than once that the case was crated up for many years. Is it possible that this was the original shipping crate for the case? If so has it been examined for any original shipping information? This could possibly point to the origin/maker of the case.

italiansport, I believe there is another thread, maybe on the members side of the forum, that discusses the maker. Most of these styles of display cases have the makers name on the center plate on the lower front edge. I am not sure, but you could probably come close by having one made by the Winchester Case Company in Fredricksburg , Texas. The nice thing about having one made is they offer front opening as an option. They are not inexpensive but they are super well made and they duplicate the style and flavor of the originals in many, many different styles. In large spacious gun rooms the front opening is not as important as in more modest size rooms. That has kept me from using any of the larger antique cabinets such as the beautiful one we are discussing in this thread.

Jim, I purchased it from Ray Brazille in 1995 (or there about) sight unseen. It was shipped to me in a newly crafted (at that time) wooden crate shipped into Palm Beach International Freight Terminal where I picked it up. It was packed well with plastic bags of Styrofoam peanuts full to the inside and outside areas. I still keep it in this crate. It's only been out 3 times.

The tough part would be the curved glass! Not everyone has the ability to recreate that glass!

Remember it from the 2017 Sypmosium
It was on a table just across from my display tables at the Concord NC Symposium... A beautiful piece of period realism and filled with so many great pieces of S&W history... I also own a like general store curved glass display case from the 1870's... Much a duplicate but obviously without the stained glass end panels. The mfg name plate attached to the front notes it as being produced in Chicago. I am currently using it to display pieces from my old West and Civil war collectables... it adds a nostalgic yesterday realism that provides the needed touch to round out the history lesson. Thanks for bringing back one of the great memories of that 2017 Symposium.

Well, THIS is the display case mentioned !
It was almost Gary Garbrecht's. We had made a deal on it. He planned on having it fully restored but then Gary passed. I never had the heart nor the ambition to bring it to another show after that.
I've had this since 1995 (or there about) purchased from Ray Brazille (RIP) who had originally found it and sold it to someone in the 1950s after which it went missing for about 40 years till it surfaced in 1995. I bought it sight unseen from just a few photographs and Ray Brazille's description. It arrived at the local Airport about a week later.
The son of the owner (who had passed some unknown amount of years prior) found it crated in the attic with a note from his Dad to call Ray Brazille if anything should happen to him.
... or ... at least that's the story that came with it.
It hasn't been out of the crate since 2001 when I last had it out at a private antique / collectors show in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
Pardon the old digital pix. Digital cameras were something new in 2001.
Anyone still have an old Sony Mavica digital camera that recorded pix to a floppy disc ? |
