Sounds like you have a .38 Safety Hammerless, 5th model, that probably has had it's barrel cut by a previous owner, as that barrel length is not a standard factory barrel, however S&W would make you such a gun on special order. See p. 99 in the SCSW, 4th edit. It was probably shipped , circa 1922. Pls. post some pictures of the gun & barrel. Ed.

First, you need to make sure your next post is opened using the "Go Advanced" option. Next, under your post you will find the "Manage Attachments" button. In the new window that opens, click on "Bowse" and it will open your computer files. Choose the first image and Upload. After it loads, you will see it in the window. You can repeat this for up to 5 images. Good luck.

It's a cut barrel and was probably cut ( and nicely done ) when it was refinished at some time in it's past. Ed.

I greatly appreciate the the info... I'm leaning toward factory ordered at this point since at least, somewhat, about 80 years of ownership history is known. Looking forward to this forum and all the history it brings!

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! You might want to look at some other threads on Bicycle Guns. I think you'll find that factory original bicycle guns had stamping either on the side of the barrel or on the top of the barrel rib running toward the latch. This was done because there wasn't room on top of the barrel when it was shortened.

Most cut barrels are relatively easy to spot. A handful are done so well it is very difficult to tell. This one falls into the later. SCSW 4th ed. pg 99 mentions of the 5th Model (of which this s/n falls into that range) : "at least 15 or so, were made with 1.5" barrels.....". This one just may be one of those 15 or so. The crown and rib look perfect to me, on the pics provided. Also a note about the barrel lettering on 1.5" hammerless pistols. I own a .32 Safety Hammerless that letters as leaving the factory with a 1.5" barrel. The barrel on this piece has no lettering of any sort on it. IIRC the reasoning is that there simply wasn't enough room on those short barrels for the stampings, which seems perfectly logical to me. You may want to consider a factory letter on this one. You just might have a real treasure there. Good luck,
WB
