A friend has asked me to help him get some info on his grandfathers old Smith. Any information would be appreciated. Rig

That's a 38 caliber double action top break revolver, 4th Model, from around 1908 or 1909. The stocks are mother of pearl and are likely after market. It Chambers 38 Smith & Wesson not 38 Special. 38 S&W can still be purchased and shot in that gun as long as the action is good.

It also has what looks to me like a 6" barrel, which makes it more desirable than the common shorter barrel lengths.
