Default I need help identifying my dad's old pistol

I got a old nickel plated revolver from my dad when he died. I thought it was a .38 special bit found out it isn't. The .38 ammo doesn't fit. Before I waste more money on ammo I'd like to make sure what exactly type it is.

Can you identify any markings? What is the serial# on the bottom of the grip?

Welcome.
I suggest that your read the ID your gun sticky above.
Your gun might be 38 S&W caliber, not 38 Special caliber. The two are different.More info is needed.

If a 38 S&W, the undersized 38 Special cartridges would drop in. Does the barrel say "32wcf", "32-20 CTG" or "32 Winchester Ctg"? There were 32-20 K Frames, and I consider it a superior cartridge.

I attached a couple pics and the serial # is 156411. I can't read what it says on the barrel by the front site

Welcome, and sorry for your father's passing.

Here is a good post for revolver ID information:

To IDENTIFY your Gun >

You have a .38 Double Action that likely dates to the mid-1880 decade. It uses the .38 S & W round, shorter and fatter than the .38 Special; the latter will fit diameter-wise but will not fully seat. Ammo is still available online and should be safe if the gun is mechanically sound.

The barrel appears to have been shortened, unless there is a bunch of patent information stamped on the right barrel (the side not visible in the photo) or everything is legible on the top strap. Hard to tell if it has been refinished, but if so someone did a nice job. Hope this is helpful

I have found a .38 bullet. I'm sure it will fit.

You will need .38 S&W ammunition. Even though it is still manufactured. it can be difficult to find as, in general, the big box stores and most gun shops will not carry it in their inventory. They can probably special order it for you. It is available from internet sources, but shipping is usually high for small quantities. There is often some for sale at larger gun shows. Do not expect it to be cheap.
