This is for sale locally and I am not up to speed on the antique Smiths, kind of a HE guy. It appears to be in .38/.40 cal. with pearls and SN 74. Any ideas?

Well, its not an antique Smith.
Lacking proofmarks, I figure it for a Spanish knockoff.
.38-40 is unusual.

Hard to see details in the photos and I was unable to enlarge them for a closer look. I too am just recently getting into the antique S&W's so by no means an expert however, the trigger guard (if I am seeing it correctly) appears to be screwed on to the frame at the front. I am not familiar with that type of attachment on a S&W. But again not an expert.

Are there any patent dates listed on the barrel rib? Even if marked .38 S&W on the side to indicate caliber, that does not mean that the gun is a S&W.

Close up photos would help.

Many foreign copies of top-break S&Ws use a screw-on trigger guard like shown on your revolver. Look at any S&W top-break and you will see the difference and that there is no screw holding the trigger guard in place. It is not likely a Belgium copy, since there is no ELG symbol stamped on the rear of the cylinder, but many countries made copies of S&W revolvers, so no way to be certain who manufactured the gun without more details and information. Is there anything stamped on the barrel rib?

Your revolver is almost certainly a 38 S&W and not a 38-40. The 5 shot cylinder was used on these medium frame guns, while the most other calibers like 38-40, 44-40, etc. were only available on large frame 6 shot revolvers.

The SN 74 caught my eye in the first place, so I tried to find it in SCSW 4 & couldn't make the trigger & guard fit with 38 WCF or 38-40 DA, and obviously not the SA SN 74. I asked the seller for additional pics yesterday morning and have not heard back. He says he's been told it's a New Mod. 3 and worth 6-8K. I'm inclined to believe he believes it, in that he has several properly priced revolvers for sale, and lists his phone no. Still, no response in 24 hrs. so it could be a thinly vailed scam. He's asking 2K. I didn't even notice the 5 round cylinder - man! I'll post any additional info. if received.

$200 would be a lot even if you wanted a type example of a cheap foreign copy.
In the 1901 Sears & Roebuck catalog, "The imported automatic (ejecting) double action revolver, imitation of Smith & Wesson." was $5.50 while a real S&W started at $10.75 with pearl handles $1.25 extra.
In the 1911 ALFA - Adolf Frank, Hamburg, Germany, the no-name topbreak was 28 marks, a S&W was 102 marks. Even an IJ or H&R was 35 marks.

I think he believes what he's been told. I can't tell you how many times I've seen ads stating that a gunsmith, shop owner, etc., "told me" this or that or the other thing, and have it be laughable. Just a couple days ago, I saw a nickeled 1905 2nd marked as "stainless S&W 38 spec. revolver" - in a gun shop! I only know enough to know what I don't know.

Jeb, I saw that one listed a few days ago on backpage and I reached out to the owner to see about additional pictures and ask the history on the gun. I also asked where he/she got their information that its 74 out of 74 guns. Looking at the pictures, I suspected a copy. $2k asking price...

He still has not responded to my attempt to contact so it may be a scam, tread carefully.

He contacted me 10 min. ago. No other pictures are available. I gave him the consensus on it so he can change the listing (save face, if you will). If he changes it, he was misinformed, if not, he's scamming. I hope he changes it.
