1800's gun identification
My son got this from his grandpa. Can anyone identify model or any info?
EDIT: The barrel has a copyright in 1880 and two other dates if that helps.

Can we get a picture of the entire gun? Also if you know what the caliber is.

Looks to be a 38 double action. Chambered in 38 smith and wesson, (not 38 special). They make great shooters. They made a bunch so not real valuable, but very cool.

Top break. Can't tell the caliber but 38 S&W was a popular caliber back then. Value in that condition ....$100 - $200. Somewhere in between. Was a very very common gun in it's time.

Not looking to sell. It's my son's now and would like to find the ammo for him to shoot it. So it is a 38 double action? I love close to a bass pro. If I go there, I ask for 38 black powder ammunition. Am I understanding correctly. Forgive my lack of familiarity. Don't want to mess up my kid's gift from his grandpa and all.

The caliber will be 38 Smith and Wesson. They may have it at bass pro but probably in smokeless powder. It was probably made before smokeless so best to use black powder loads in it. The smokeless will fit but I wouldnt fire it in it if it were mine. Also its possible that its a 32.

The cylinder length shows it is a 38 S&W. As long as the gun locks up good and times ok any ammo you will find will be safe modern ammo is kept to the original black powder velocities.

Welcome to the forum.
As others have stated it most likely shoots the .38 S&W cartridge not to be confused with .38 S&W special. The S&W special in a longer cartridge and also more powerful. Some folks confuse the two.
You should be able to purchase .38 S&W at your LGS or it can be found online. Not as popular as the .38 S&W special and probably more expensive due to lower demand but available. I find it at gun shows and usually can be had for a decent price.
You may want to have a local gun smith check the gun for function before trying to shoot it just to be safe. Especially if you and your son are not familiar with gun function.

Modern smokeless powder has more energy/higher velocity than the older black powder. I would shoot modern ammo in it as long as it's loaded for black powder velocity. Or look online for black powder loads
