Default New Model 3 & Schofield converted to .22 (revisited)

While salvaged pictures from Photobucket I thought I'd repost these here. My New Model 3 Target model and a nickel Schofield that I saw for sale but didn't buy. Shown here for comparison. Mine was converted from .44 Russian by a railroad machinest/blacksmith in the 1920s in the Santa Cruz, Ca. area. I bought it from his grandson and also sent pics of the Schofield wondering if he did that one, too. But he didn't think so. Mine is relined with a lathed down .22 rifle barrel. The same treatment appears to be on the Schofield. Mine cost $600 last year, the Schofield sold for $1500, but not to me, as mentioned. Mine shoots great. Note upturned piring pin modified to hit off center for rimfire.

While I am sure you and everyone else wishes it was original, that is long gone. What is left is an interesting conversion done at a time when it was probably considered nothing but an old obsolete gun, Who know maybe it had barrel problems or what ever. I find it neat how it was converted.

Here's my antique top break .22 conversion, that I've posted about before. No idea who did the work or when but it's nicely done.

Having done a few .22 conversions I'm very interested in the methods, ingenuity & expertise of others.

My latest, ca. 1995, a '51 Navy repro --

In 1969 I bought a Model 3, first model Russian that was converted to .22 rf. Price $39.50. Because of the mod the seller thought it of little value. I was able to drive out the barrel liner, and the rifling was still there and nice. Drove out the cylinder inserts, and made a new extractor star. Except for the FP bushing the restored gun looks great!

I wonder sometimes with all of the newer manufacturing being done by CNC machines rather than a actual trained machinest if this kind of work will be considered an almost lost art in America ,growing up there were lots of men in our neighborhood who were machinest and tool and die makers not so many anymore .Sorry I wanted to add beautiful guns thanks for posting .
