Perfected: What year?
I’m hoping someone can give me a better idea of the date this Perfected 38 S&W top break was manufactured or shipped. The serial number is 28809.
The S&W Standard Catalog, Third Edition, just gives the total serial number range and years manufactured: 1 - 59400, 1909 - 1920.
This old shooter has a lot of pitting and has been re-blued.
The bore is shiny, however, and it shoots nicely.

According to the SWCA database, it would have shipped most likely in 1912 or 1913. From those pictures, I cannot tell that it was re-blued?? The stampings are sharp, the pins are not flattened, no buffing noted, and stocks are as nice as the gun. Maybe someone went over existing finish with cold bluing to darken the blemishes.

Yeah, it doesn't look like they did any buffing. Thanks for your help on the date.

Hey, the serial # of my Perfected is within 100 of yours! Maybe they came off the production line on the same day.
But yours looks to be in better shape than mine. <thumbs up>

This is a nice old pocket carried Perfected with classic black powder corrosion on the under side of the rib. Maybe some cold blue but it is not in hand for inspection. Just shoot and enjoy.

My recollection of this model is that the factory played some tricks with the serial numbering or sequence, to not let their competition track its production numbers easily. If so it will probably take a letter of authenticity to nail down the ship date.
