Question 32 S&W too break with hammer - how old?

My father has an old S&W 32 too break. The gun has been around forever. As a lover of S&W revolvers he wants me to have the gun. I’d love to find a little info on it. Serial # is 72955. Can anyone help me with when this gun was made? I’d appreciate any info at all. I’m not familiar with the older revolvers. My collection consists of modern revolvers like the 629, 460V, and 500. We’re taking the gun to the range today to test fire it.

It's a .32 Double Action 4th model, from the mid-late 1880 decade. An exact ship date and destination can be found with a letter of authenticity:

Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation - Letter Process - Insuring that the rich history of Smith & Wesson will continue for generations to come

The pearl stocks are probably aftermarket and current factory .32 S & W (not Long) ammo should be safe to use in it. Hope this is helpful.

Thank you very much! That is very helpful! I didnít realize how old this gun is! The pearl grips were aftermarket but he has the original factory grips as well.

S&W .32 DA, # 72955, was made Aug. 27, 1884. This model has a very delicate action, with small parts that can fail due to age, etc. and replacement parts are almost impossible to find, so I would advise to think twice before doing much firing. Ed.
