Default Pawn shop find. DOB please!

This .32 DA (serial # 324076) was marked @ $49.95 in a LGS today. It has some mechanical issues (cylinder spins freely with the hammer at rest and a "push off" problem in single action). I got it for $40. The stocks are numbered to the gun. A trip to my gunsmith will get her up and running.

Best,
Charles

Charles, you must be part bird dog!! You sure come up with some really cool stuff, for next to nothing! Congratulations on a really cool deal. That is a nifty gun indeed, and in surprisingly good shape. Mechanical problems sound minor, I would have jumped on that one also. I love newer guns, but those old timers were built with consummate craftsmanship. The interior of these look like a fine Swiss watch.

Best Regards, Les

It's a later one, the last listed SN for the .32 DA is 327641 from 1919. Knowing S & W it may have shipped anytime between 1918 and 1940 .

Enjoy!

"A trip to my gunsmith will get her up and running."
You are fortunate if you know someone that will work on a top break. Most won't touch them. And any needed parts will be tough to come by.

Charles, Good luck with that .32's repair. I have a .32 DA that I wrote an article about for the S&WCA Journal, that I called "The S&W From Hell" It has seven date codes stamped on the frame from when it went back to the factory for repairs! 1911-1912 era. (It still doesn't work !) Roy Jinks told me it was the record for returns to the factory and as these .32DA's and their counterpart, the Ladysmiths, were the biggest headaches for the Service Dep't due to the tiny parts and get difficulty in correct fitting and assembly. Ed.

I really would like to read what your gunsmith says about it and how much to make it functional. I hope it is an inexpensive repair and not a parts only gun.

My 'smith has repaired.38DAs & New Departures for me before. He is a retired machinist. So, fabricating parts is right up his alley. He has never failed me yet!!

Best,
Charles

Sounds like an interesting addendum to the thread, keep a photo record of the disassembly and repair process, sort of like Richard is doing with his engraving project. We could all learn from it, or at least share. I know nothing about this particular model.

Best Regards, Les

I took it to my 'smith today. He diagnosed the problem and is sure it'll be as good as new soon.
