Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! It all depends on finish condition and bore corrosion. The grips hurt a bit. Here is what is quoted in the Standard Catalog:

Exc+ Exc ....Fine ...VG ..Good Fair ..Poor
n/a* 17,000 8500 5000 3500 2500 1500

(Page 114).

Please post some pictures showing all sides of the gun. You can attach up to 5 per post.

Welcome. The first problem to solve here is that the Schofield revolver was never made in 38 caliber? It was a large gun in 45 caliber, so as Guy stated, pictures or a detailed description, all markings found on the gun, and serial number is needed to help you out.

UH...yeah. Thanks for covering for me, Gary. Apparently got a rash of ADD today. Too focused on the Schofield.

Those prices are for a Schofield in .45 S&W calibre. If you have a .38, it's an entirely different gun and they made quite a few in different .38 calibres.

Photos will help. A quick check would be to count the holes in the cylinder; 5 = .38 top break; 6 = large frame Model #3.

That's a refinished .38 Double Action 2nd Model. Made approx. 1883.

You have a .38 Double Action, 2nd Issue. At some point it has been re-nickeled. It shoots the .38 S&W cartridge and should not be confused with the .38 Special.

If the action functions, you might get someone to pay $100 for it. You can find replica grips for it at NC Ordinance.

It's easy to learn, and not a lot to study.

Basically, there were two models, both in .45 S&W caliber, and made for the US Army, to serve alongside Colt SAA .45's. Most went to militia units after the regular Army dropped them, and Wells Fargo bought some and cut the barrels from seven inches to five inches. Designer was Maj. George Schofield, who killed himself with one after the Army didn't retain it and buy a lot more.

It was single-action and had an improved barrel latch over the earlier S&W topbreak guns. You can buy Italian repros, most made for the slightly longer .45 Colt round. DO NOT expect to shoot "Ruger only" reloads in them.

See? Now, you know 90% of what you should.

Welcome to the forum from Massachusetts the home of Smith and Wesson, a division of American Outdoor Brands.

Since your gun has been refinished and has broken stocks, collector value is nil. As a shooter, it doesn't hold much value as the cartridge although still available is not as popular as .38 S&W Special and younger shooters prefer black plastic guns that hold millions of rounds.

At auction you might get a couple of hundred but I wouldn't expect a bidding war.
