Default Baby Russian with Ivory stocks

I recently came into a .38 single action first model, aka "Baby Russian" with ivory grips serial numbered to the gun. The Roy Jinks book of 1977 indicates 9 copies were so stocked. I find no subsequent references in S&W materials.

Anyone care to calculate the odds of survival of one out of nine after approximately 143 years? Anyone else have or seen one?

Pics, pics and pics please! I have several Baby Russians but only one has wood. All the others I've seen had block letter S&W hard rubber.

I also have a Baby Russian with ivory grips, numbered to the gun. However the gun letters as being shipped with hard rubber grips. I talked with Roy Jinks about this gun and his opinion was the grips were fitted to the gun by the distributor.

I have a .38 Baby Russian with Ivory Stocks numbered to the gun, and the Jinks letter to go with it. The letter states that the Stocks, wood case, and oil can, were supplied by the M.W. Robinson Company who the gun was shipped to. The Baby Russian left the factory with checkered black hard rubber grips at a wholesale price of $9.00

Rigor Mortis, The only chance to see if your BR was shipped with Ivory stocks will be getting a factory letter from the S&W Historical Assoc. The odds are it got the stocks from a distributor, or a later owner. Ed.

I guess what many are implying is that it is not hard to hand-number or stamp stocks to match the gun, and as Ed states, only a factory letter will tell you with certainty that the gun left the factory with ivory stocks.

Is the right stock stamped or hand numbered?

My ivory stocks are hand numbered on both sides. For comparison purposes the pic is in my Album, currently in page 7 in, "Albums", . Look for Joe Canucks .38 Baby Russian album. One of these days I'll figure out how to just attach the pic here.

One of my Baby Russian is engraved and has pearl grips which are perfectly fitted. However, these grips are not numbered.

That's really beautiful. I used to have a blue Baby Russian. They are such beautifully made guns.

Exceptional display Joe! My piece has the serial # marked on both panels.
Also comforting to know someone else has issues posting pictures. As time allows I will forward pix to someone else to post for me.

Baby Russian, ser. # 22994 has ivory stocks, numbered to the gun on the back of the right panel only, in faint pencil. Letter request has been sent. In my experience, dealer installed ivory stocks usually have both panels marked on the back in ink. I've never seen a factory set of stocks marked with ink, only with pencil.

Ed
