Bill, Richard aways calls me for an opinion on asking prices vs. reality on any collectable S&Ws he gets in the store. I think I told him he would never get a grand for the SS you are discussing, as the barrel was an unnumbered replacement, if the buyer, like you, knew what the gun should be. A local source has been feeding him a large S&W collection, piece by piece, over the last couple years. Ed.

Probably why that one is still there and the other two are gone.

The stocks for a 1st Model SS should be black hard rubber. The walnut targets with gold medallion were offered in the teens. Also, the serial number you gave does not show up in Roy Jinks book. Neal & Jinks tried to capture all 1st Model Single Shots for 22, 32, and 38, but a few with numbers not published have come up. Is your serial number on the butt or on the front strap of the butt-frame?

Gary's sometimes confused. I reckon he was confused this time by your identification of what you're now calling a 3rd Model as opposed to what you initially referred to as a Model of '91. I know I was. But then I too am sometimes confused----seems to be going around.

I am confused about lots of things, but with what we had to work with, I think I made a reasonable guess. You called the SS a Model 1891, which has the recoil shield on the frame as a 38 3rd Model Single Action revolver, which was used to manufacture the 1st series of single shot pistols. Now that you state there are grooves in the frame instead of recoil shield, it would be properly named Third Model Single Shot. The original barrel would not have had the Model of 1891 stamped, but would have had the walnut medallion stocks, so that is a good thing.
I did notice that your serial number is above the 7787, which could identify it as a 1st or 3rd Model, but without pictures, you could have had either. Post a photo or two. Your 3rd Model would have most likely been shipped in 1916.
