This is NOT a Model Number One-and-a-Half New Model!
This appears to be a “tip up” revolver.
My friend found it among his parent's property in the old family house in Iowa that he is clearing out now that they have passed on, and is curious about its nomenclature and age.
My quick check of Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, 4th Edition indicates to my eyes that it may be a Model Number One-and-a-Half New Model (Model One-and-a-Half, 2nd Issue), but I'm not sure!
Can anyone among this forum identify it for us? Many thanks in advance.

OAS means "Otis A Smith"
Not a Smith & Wesson
The hinge on these is fake I think. Its made to look like a top break but its actually a solid frame. One of the pretty numerous "Suicide Specials" that came out in the late 1800s

Interesting, looks like Smith did make them that broke open too. All I've ever seen are the ones with the fake hinge that are solid frame

A little trivia: Some years ago, I was visiting a dealer friend's table in the back of the room at a large gun show, when one of his gophers came up to the table with the info. that "A little old lady just came in the front door with a minty engraved S&W in it's orig. box, all in a paper bag" and she want's $300 for it" He gave the gopher the money and he soon came back with the gun. It was an Otis Smith, pawn shop engraved with a dull nail, in an Ivory soap box with a broken hammer tip. Ed.
