Question 38 S&W Top Brake Revolver

I am new to this. I have a Top Break 38 Smith & Wesson revolver. SN # 163434. I am hoping to find out when it was made and any other information available.

It's a .38 Safety Hammerless (fourth model). From the early 1900s, but I cannot get any closer than that. What appear to be factory original Mother-of-Pearl (MOP) grips make it very interesting to collectors. The cartridge used is .38 S&W, NOT .38 Special. That ammunition is still available but not particularly easy to find. One more item - these revolvers are often referred to as "Lemon Squeezers" due to the safety bar on the rear of the grip frame which must be depressed (squeezed) before the trigger can be pulled. But that is just slang, not official. You have a very nice example which would still be effective today for use as a personal defense weapon, more or less equivalent to a .380 pistol.

I would advise you to remove those stocks during any shooting time. They are too valuable to risk them to recoil. (just my opinion). You can buy black hard rubber or repro grips for not that much money to put on for shooting. (Note: removing grips should be done very carefully -do some research on the proper method)

Welcome to the forum, hope you'll let us know how it shoots . I would second the notion of getting different grips for shooting those MOPs look nice and they can be fragile .

Welcome to the forum.

I would recommend that you gently wipe the gun down with some Flitz to remove any surface crud and bring back a little shine. You may wish to remove the stocks prior to any cleaning. After the Flitz treatment I would apply a coat of Renaissance Wax to preserve the remaining finish and ward off any rust or corrosion.

Neat little guns.
