Top Break 38
I just bought a Top break 5 shot that needs a hammer in rough condition. $75.00 at an estate sale. #145625. Was it worth it?. Is it worth fixing?.

Welcome to the Forum. Rough condition 38 DAs are not worth much. There were over a half-million of this revolver made and value is quite low except for high condition guns. A picture would help determine if your revolver is worth repairing, but I might suspect that there may be some reasons why the hammer was taken out. Also, you have a 3rd Model and will need a hammer for that model. There were 5 different 38 Double Action revolvers and changes were made in the hammer design.
If nothing else, you could make a nice display box and put it on the wall.
Let me add that the ship date would be in the mid 1880s.

Follow up question and hopefully this won't count as a poach-
I came across a 38 top break today also- 70-85% original nickel finish. The thing that caught my eye was the grips. The grips were not chipped or cracked, and looked just like these in the link (this gun in the link is identicle but better condition, excpet the grips condition is the same)
Smith & Wesson - 38 Double Action-Revolver Firearms Auction Lot-50
Thanks! Pete

The ones in the link are factory pearl stocks, likely from the 1910 decade. They may be worth more than the gun, but if original to it the combination would be worth more than one with the standard hard rubber stocks.

Thank you all for the welcome and the info, I really appreciate it. I found a local gunsmith here in Colorado who is going to look at it in a week or two. It is so rough that the suggestion of cleaning it and making it a wall display will probably be it's final outcome. I'll get some pictures loaded tonight. The hammer is in it but the striking point is broke off.
