Default Mainspring for a 44 frontier

Is there any modern equivalent spring that would work as a replacement?

Also looking for a new hammer stirrup as the spring and the stirrup has broken of on one side. Wondering where i can find such parts.

Beyond trying all of the available parts sources your best bet would be to place a WTB ad here on the forum and watch sites like eBay and Gunbroker for someone parting out a gun.

I'll second what James has said. Be persistent in your quest as factory spares don't exist. I went through this exercise for almost five years before I got my factory replacement mainspring.

Folks will suggest Uberti as a source of the mainspring. I did not follow up on this lead. Some will say that making the spring isn't rocket science (and it isn't) but I wanted an authentic S&W made mainspring.

A Single Action mainspring is not the same as a Double Action mainspring. I have heard tales of shortening a SA spring but the overall shape is different so I never pursued that reasoning either.

Be patent, persistent and good luck.

I have a fairly decent parts stock for the single actions I likely have one, not sure about the stirrup as I don't remove them from the spare hammers. If you have a DA .44 1st Frontier, I cannot help you.

44-40 Frontier DA, yes.

If i'm not mistaken the 44 Russian has the same configuration only difference is the lenght of the cylinder and the barrel? So maybe i can source a dog of a 44 russian and butcher it for parts?

I've got a 1st model .44 DA that was left with me many years ago. It is not pretty but, it functions in Double action only and does not have grip panel. You can have that one for parts money as I do not repair .44 DA first models any more. I repair only single action Model 3s.

Photo showing my problem. The spring snapped where it was supposed to rest on the right arm on the hammer stirrup. The arm snapped at an earlier point a few years back, the gun functioned after that and is still functional, but i don't think this is something that will last.

Can somebody verify that the 44 DAs have interchangeable mainsprings and hammers?

Howdy

I don't have a Double Action 44 Frontier Model (44-40) but I have a couple of the 44 Russian versions. The only real difference between the 44-40 version and the 44 Russian version is the 44-40 version had a cylinder 1 9/16" long vs the usual 1 7/16" 44 Russian cylinder. Some of the later 44 Russians also had the 1 9/16" cylinders. The frame window on the 44-40 versions were stretched 1/8" for the longer cylinders.

The mechanisms should be the same, including the main springs.

Check out Numrich Gun Parts. They have a few parts for the Double Action 44. They don't have any hammer springs right now, I just checked. But there stock varies as they buy old guns and part them out.

Sorry, you can't have either of my springs, but the spring from either model should fit.

Check out Numrich Gun Parts. They have some parts for the 44 Double Action now, but no mainsprings. Check them over time, their stock varies as they buy old guns and part them out.
