Hey folks,

I am trying to nail down a date of manufacture for this revolver. The serial number is 81XX. Thanks in advance.

Well if you know it is a 1st Model, it would have to be a 32 S&W caliber. They made over 91,000 1st Model 32 Safety Hammerless, but only 5200 1st Model 38 Safety revolvers were made. If a 32 caliber, it would have shipped from the factory around 1890.

Serial number 8129 was shipped from the factory in Mar. 1890, Serial number 8130 was shipped from the factory in Aug. 1888, and serial number 8131 was shipped from the factory in Feb. 1890. As you can see, S&W did not ship guns in serial number sequences and the 100 1st model Safeties on this page of the Day Book (Serial numbers 8100 to 8199) have ship dates from 1888 to 1890, which gives you a two year window for your serial number 81XX.
