In the late 60s or mid 70s. my brother-in-law and I were visiting a gun sow in Knoxville, Tennessee. He bought a .44 Russian caliber nickel plated revolver. It had a 4 inch barrel and was double action only. It was tight, and we were young and stupid. We cut off some (I think) .44 mag cases, loaded them up and shot it. I had a Lyman loading manual (I think) so we must have found the load in that. I remember only that it shot really high. He bound an old shoulder holster that fit reasonably well, so he carried it at work, as he was a night gas station attendant in Atlanta.
I have never heard of a .44 Russian that was DAO. I assume someone butchered it. he has long since sold it, so no new information is to be gained. I think it had been re-nickeled, but knew little then. This is probably not enough information for anyone to comment on, but considering what an Italian Replica costs today, we should have kept it.
