Nothing and I believe this one is beyond years for a letter or historical foundation history. I was reading in J Surpica's book about the early engraved guns. My thought this is a good example of factory engraved; however I am not an expert in this one area. I am learning, but engraving as a area of interest is very involved. I never like venturing into a place where eagles would not dare!

Mark, It is a very nice example of New York dealer engraving, maybe even from Nimschke's shop, in my opinion. The factory did not really have "in house" engravers at the time of this gun and a customer wanting an engraved S&W was usually told to order it from a S&W distributor. It still is worth a letter, if only to verify it is a gun shipped to a NYC dealer. It was probably shipped by the dealer in a case, also. Ed

Ed,

I agree with Ed about S&W not really having much in the way of factory engraving. This pistol below was letter as shipping from the factory as an engrave pistol. Doing further research over the years with others who have more experience in this field, S&W most likely shipped it to a dealer or engraving house to have the work done, then they sent it back to the factory, which in turn shipped it out as an engraved gun. But of course, I'm not 100% sure.
This one shipped to M.W. Robinson in NYC in 1872.
