Default value question 1st model 2nd issue??

I was looking at this pistol last night and this is what I know or think I know.

#107500
flat sided irregular side plates
silver plated brass frame
blued barrel and 7 shot cyl
.22 short BP
rose stocks
patent dates on cyl: April 3, 1855 - July 7, 1859 - Dec 13, 1863
I was told with the right ammo it would be functional.
40% condition (?)

I was told its worth about $400. Is this close?

There is also a 2nd one that at first glance appears to be in better condition but we didn't have time to look at it closely.

Based on condition, I would think that it may be a tad high. I would probably offer $300 if I were looking at it. In today's plastic world, there are not a ton of buyers for these guns.

My friend helping me told me these older guns are not his forte and asked me to post it here where the real experts are.

Thanks

Just bought one Sun. at a show for $275. About the same shape as one in pic. Sorry. Kind of a novelty item like a 35 cal. Every collector has one.
Really under valued in my eyes.

There are some out there that are in better condition, that is a given. However, there are no new ones available. Most were made about 150 years ago.

Hello WR, OH CONT RARE Monsieur, I have seen ones that are brand new. Old Vegas Show back in 1970s. More than I had in any account. Mike

Being gun ignorant I am constantly surprised by some of their prices like the one I posted pictures of.

We have a second one that's in way better shape but I'm sure its not worth much more.

As my friend told me about this one and being the first cartridge pistol S&W made and when it was made its kind of a shock that its only worth a couple hundred dollars. I wasn't expecting a gold mine but more than what it is worth.

Then he'll be describing another hand gun and according the big thick book its worth $2000+.

Just like opening a box of Cracker Jacks.

As was alluded to, condition and rarity is everything with the early Smiths. The First Model, 1st Issue, 1st types are very collectible. This example (1st Model, 2nd Issue) was made after some improvements and is a revolver made as a second generation. Many thousands of this Model were made and therefore we come back to the condition issue and the valuation. It is still a collectible piece.

The values you have been quoted here are realistic if you want to sell it quickly
With over 100,000 produced, and being 2nd issue, the condition of the one you posted is only average at best.
I have seen many listed for more $ but not too many sold.
Posters on this forum are usually very conservative about $

Comparing your revolver to those in excellent condition, you will start to see the deficiencies that result in low value. Silver plating is very worn and still flaking, bottom edges of stocks were sharp on unworn examples, stocks are dented and cracked, no bluing left on barrel, all edges on barrel are worn and rounded. Not your fault, as it is a well worn carry gun of old times. I have regularly seen these sell at auction for $250.

Can you shoot it? Technically yes, but you first need to perform safety checks to make sure that every chamber locks up securely and properly. Also need to make sure that the hammer can not be pushed off full cock, and thirdly you need to be certain there are no cracks in the cylinder, barrel or frame. To me, the gun looks as if it has not been shot too much, but rather received its wear in someone's vest pocket. The face of a often shot Model 1 is usually pitted from black powder residue.

CCI used to make a few 22 Short rounds that offer low pressure options for a gun like yours. 22 BB, 22 Caps and 22 CB Shorts would all work in that gun, but I do not believe the first two are being made any more. Do I shoot my Model 1s, yes I do - would I recommend that you shoot your Model 1, no I would not because I cannot be sure the revolver is sound enough to shoot.
