Default Model 1 3rd issue repair help

I am going to try to replace the broken cylinder stop and missing cylinder stop spring on a Model 1 third issue .22. This will require driving out the pins that go transversely through the top strap. Does anyone know whether the pins are tapered? Does one drive them out from left to right or right to left? Thanks in advance.

Pins are straight. No taper. Use "cupped" punches (not flat ended) to preserve the rounded ends of the pins. I also recommend 'starter' punches to begin moving the pins out of the frame.

Pins are driven in on the right side, out on the left.

Default model 1 3rd issue

I would look at each end of the pins to see if some other person drove it out that way. If one end is deformed, then you would drive it out the same way. Also, you may want to soak it in Kroil to give it time to dwell. As mentioned, use cup tip punches for the pins so you do not flatten them out. Go slow and you should not have any problems.

Well, we have two opinions on the pins. Are the darn pins directional or not? If Mike and Guy could please get together on this point it would be greatly appreciated. I have my short and long cupped punches waiting for a mutual consensus.

Default Thanks

Thanks to everyone who replied. I am not exactly sure what to do, except to use a brass punch if possible, use lots of penetrating oil and go slow. The suggestion to look for evidence of pins being removed in the past was stroke of genius. None on the Model 1 in question but my Model 1 1/2 bears marks showing that the pins were driven out from left to right and successfully replaced sometime in the past. I will try to do the same. If the pins are tapered, it might work and if they are not tapered it won't hurt anything.

The pens are not tapered. But the typical practice on Smith & Wesson is to insert the pins from the right side and remove the pins from the left.

I also suggest that the frame be supported on a bag of shot. I use 7 1/2s as the shot conforms to the revolver frame irregularities, supports it and the pin is allowed to start out of the frame.
