This model started production in 1877 at serial number "1" and ran until 1891 with almost 110,000 made. Your 38 SA does not have the Gustave Young intertwined S&W logo on the stocks, dating its manufacture to 1877 to 1879. Young introduced the logo in 1879. It appears that the early years of production ran full tilt and likely 10,000 to 15,000 were made per year, so 1878 would be a good estimate of ship date. There are few entries in the SWCA database for this model and it can get confused with the first model 38 SA, which also ran from serial number "1".

Your gun is the .38 Single Action, 2nd model, and Gary's info is correct. The pre-Gustave Young's intertwined S&W logo design stocks should be numbered to your gun on the back side of the right panel. These guns are fun shooters and will handle modern factory .38S&W rounds which have been loaded to pressures safe for older black powder guns. Ed.

Yes, and Remington "Wheel Gun" factory loads are available in this caliber if the gun checks out as safe to shoot. Mr. Elmer Keith reports in Sixguns by Keith that the 38 S&W is an accurate cartridge although not powerful enough for much game shooting, but he talks about rolling ground squirrels at sixty yards or so . I have shot this fun round quite a bit albeit not as accurately as Elmer did.
