Default need help in identifying a revolver

Im not sure which this model is. Thought it might be a "Baby Russian". I am attaching pics. Can anyone I D this one? The weapon is a 38 cal top load, 3 1/2 barrel. The serial number on the butt is the only number I can locate.

S&W, .38 Single Action, 2nd Model (or variation). The extractor housing is the shorter version. 1st Model has a longer housing and is the Baby Russian.

Hello, first post person, and welcome. Mike is right on. Appears to be a garage find. Just soak it in some oil. NO shoot it yet!

Thanks for the info. Bought it at an auction for $50.00. Not planning on shooting it. I am 72 years old - just wanted to own something older than me. Ha!

Welcome to the Forum. $50 is not a bad price and leaves you lots of room to add a set of black hard rubber stocks. You can find these quite easily since they are the same size at 38 Double Action revolvers and the Model 1903 32 Hand Ejector (I frame) pre-WWII models. They are readily available on ebay and other gun auction sites. A solid worn pair to match your revolver should not cost you over $30 shipped. That serial number places a ship date at around 1880 - 1885 era.

I should add that reproduction stocks are available as well. Check with gunpartscorp.com, go to manufacturers, find Smith & Wesson, find revolvers, and look for 38 Single Action parts. Good luck.

As I mentioned in a previous post, look for reproduction stocks on those sites as well as search ebay for a set of hard rubber I frame stocks. Any stocks properly labeled as Model 1903, 38 Double Action, 38 Safety, and 38 Perfected should not be a problem to find on ebay in used condition.

I have searched ebay and found nothing for an I frame (lots of J and K frames). When I look under the stocks button, my model is not listed.

Check with vintagegungrips.com for Smith & Wesson Double Action .38 Break Top Revolver grips, but remember to buy the screw and escutcheons.

The free grip offer doesn't come around often. Congratulations to merl67; class act! Good show! Those grips (or stocks in S&W lingo) would be perfect for the revolver. Patina and honest wear go together in my opinion.

As is often said on this forum, "Without pictures, it didn't happen". I'm a sucker for happy endings.
